Shearling – Product Care

Shearling is a luxury made from nature. The combination of supple leather and plush wool demands special attention. With mindful care, it will retain its sumptuous texture and inherent warmth for many years.

Wearing & Immediate Care

  • Shearling may be worn in light rain or damp conditions, but avoid heavy downpours or full saturation. Excess moisture can stiffen the leather backing and compromise the wool pile. If the item becomes wet, gently shake off excess water or snow, blot carefully, then hang on a broad-shouldered hanger to dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Do not brush or comb the wool when it is damp. Allow it to dry thoroughly first to preserve the fibre integrity.
  • Avoid applying perfume, creams or sprays directly onto the shearling, especially those containing alcohol. Be cautious of long-term contact with colored textiles which may transfer dye onto the wool or leather.
    Brushing & Minor Cleaning
  • Once fully dry, you may gently revive the wool surface using a soft-bristled brush or wide-tooth comb, working in the direction of the pile. Avoid aggressive brushing, particularly on napped or straightened wool finishes.
  • For the leather side, remove light dust or surface dirt with a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, a slightly damp cloth may be used, but always test discreetly first. Do not spray or saturate the leather with water or cleaning fluids.
  • For more substantial stains or soiling, seek a specialist who is experienced with shearling or sheepskin garments. Do not attempt harsh spot-cleaning with enzymatic detergents or industrial solvents.

Storage & Seasonal Care

  • When not in use, hang your shearling on a large padded hanger to support its weight and shape. Use a breathable garment bag such as cotton or canvas and store in a cool, dry place. Avoid compressing the item or packing it tightly.
  • Never store your shearling in plastic or airtight bags, as lack of airflow may cause mildew, color transfer or texture flattening.
  • Periodically allow the garment to air out in a well-ventilated space. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or strong lighting, which can fade the color or dry the leather.
  • For annual upkeep, especially after winter wear, it is advisable to entrust your shearling to a professional cleaning service specializing in leather and shearling. This helps maintain the wool loft, leather flexibility and overall longevity.

Embrace the Unique Character

  • The natural materials of shearling mean that each piece is unique. Slight variations in color, texture or fibre behavior are inherent and contribute to the item’s individuality.
  • Treat your shearling as a companion that gains character and depth with time.

Every Hide Tells a Different Story

No two hides are ever identical. Every piece of leather carries its own grain, texture and natural character. Before the first cut is made, our artisans carefully study each hide, allowing its individuality to guide every garment they create.

The Maker's Eye

Craftsmanship begins with observation. Before a single cut is made, every hide is individually examined by skilled artisans, who carefully position each pattern to respect its natural grain, texture and character. It is this human judgement that gives every Bigardini garment its individuality.

Assembled by Many Hands

From the first cut to the final inspection, every Bigardini garment is shaped through a series of careful, deliberate steps. Requiring between 15 and 30 hours of skilled craftsmanship, each piece is brought to life by up to seven artisans, each contributing their expertise at a different stage of the process. Every stitch, seam and finishing detail reflects the patience, precision and experience behind every garment.

Crafted for a Lifetime

The finest garments are not measured by seasons, but by the years they are worn. As natural leather ages, it develops a richer texture and deeper character, becoming uniquely its owner's. This is the enduring beauty of true craftsmanship: creating pieces designed to be lived in, cherished and passed on.
